'Merry
Christmas 1914
We not shoot, you not shoot.'
Starting on Christmas Eve and in
other places on Christmas Day, the Christmas truce of 1914 covered as much
as two-thirds of the British-German front, with thousands of
soldiers taking part. It grew out of no single initiative but sprang up in
each place spontaneously and independently.

1 November 2004 » Refuseniks
workshop in London
|
A well attended event
As outrage continues about the horrendous loss of life in Iraq, a timely
“Refusing to Kill” workshop brought together refuseniks,
veterans and grassroots campaigners to the Crossroads Women’s Centre
(London, 30 October). The
well-attended event was hosted by Payday whose new video highlights the
long tradition of men and women refusing the military training that turns
people into killers, torturers and rapists.
Matan Kaminer and Adam Maor spent two years in jail for refusing to serve
in the Israeli army and the occupation. Now released from the army
altogether, following continuous campaigning from their parents and
international support, they were touring the UK to get support for others,
including Laura Milo, the first woman refusenik to be jailed.
A
lively discussion heard from a Ugandan member of the All African Women’s
Group who described the poverty which pushes so many to join up, and now
faces deportation back to the horrors she escaped; a Polish man who
refused military service and challenged the collusion between the army and
the church; other contributions came from Afghanistan, Argentina, Chile,
Italy, Palestine, the US and the UK.
Participants endorsed a petition
defending the right to protest in Parliament Square, and heard that a
Church has just opened there, praying for peace worldwide.
From
left to right: Ben Martin (Payday), Matan Kaminer, Cristel (Crossroads
Women's Centre),
Adam Maor, Kay Cherry (Crossroads Women's Centre).
