US: military families lead the anti-war march Poor conditions and low morale among troops have produced an undercurrent of dissent among US military families. We received more than 70 emails and phone calls from relatives of US forces overseas. All but two were negative - about the treatment of soldiers, the reasons for the Iraq war, the pain of family separation and the insensitivity of the military bureaucracy. Read here. »

>> US soldiers speak on TV against
staying in Iraq Many soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) from Fort Stewart privately express their displeasure with current policies but are reluctant to speak publicly. They say they have been told at least three different times they would be going home in just a few weeks, only to have their departure delayed. But some have spoken on US National TV criticizing the civilian decisions makers. One soldier told ABC News, "I've got my own 'Most Wanted' list. The aces in my deck are Paul Bremer, Donald Rumsfeld, George Bush and Paul Wolfowitz." Another said, "If Donald Rumsfeld was here. I'd ask him for his resignation." . >> Marine gets 7 months in jail for
refusing anthrax vaccin Captain Eric Enz recently pleaded guilty to refusing an order to be vaccinated against anthrax. ”The people who refuse this are not the dummies or the troublemakers," said former Air Force F-16 pilot retired Lt. Col. John Richardson of Raleigh, a critic of the vaccine. "I get two to three unsolicited calls or e-mails a week -- sometimes as many as five a day -- from kids who are sick." "In a random survey of 1,253 guard and reserve pilots and aircrew, the General Accounting Office found 84 percent suffered minor reactions [to the anthrax vaccine] and at least 24 percent major multiple "systemic" reactions, the latter more than 100 times higher than the estimate by the manufacturer." The committee of Swiss soldiers who refused to repress
demonstrators at the recent G8 Conference in Evian (see N&U 16 May)
wrote to Payday: “Officially 25% of soldiers refused to go to the G8 summit. The army claimed that this was not higher than for normal “repetition courses”. In fact, we informally got information that the army had serious problems to find enough people: In some units up to 60% of soldiers refused to serve.” Read their story here |

Soldiers Could Be Facing War Crimes Charges Charges have been brought in a Belgium Court against General Franks and unnamed soldiers under his command. The charges have been brought by Iraqi victims and their relatives. The plaintiffs have been seriously injured or have lost relatives as the result of: - the use of cluster bombs - attacks on the civilian population including journalists - acts of aggression against health services and other Iraqi infrastructure - looting protected by or under orders from the U.S. army. Being a soldier can be hazardous during the war – and after! Especially when the war was illegal, a warning many have made before the invasion (See N&U 12 March). Read about it here |
