DAY 205 URGENT ACTION: FREE SAMER ISSAWI NOW!
Al-Awda, The Palestine Right To Return Coalition and the Free Samer Issawi Campaign call on all people of conscience to take immediate action to help save the life of Palestinian political prisoner Samer Issawi who has been on a hunger strike for 205 days.
Issawi has been detained by Israeli authorities without any charge whatsoever. He had been released from prison in October 2011 as a part of the Shalit prisoner swap. But was detained again without charge and has been refusing food since July 2012 to protest his detention. He is in critical condition. He is losing his vision, vomiting blood and lapsing in and out of consciousness.
The Israeli occupation authorities and courts continue to detain Palestinians under the "Emergency Law of 1945", which was in force during the British Mandate of Palestine. This "law", which violates international law, allows the Zionist authorities to detain Palestinians without trial or providing reason, and to repeatedly extend the term of detention. The Israeli authorities have also ratified the Unlawful Combatant Law of 2000, which allows the occupation state to detain Palestinians without charge or disclosure of the term of detention. There are currently about 290 Palestinian administrative detainees. In addition to Issawi, Jafar Izzeddin, Ayman Sharawneh and Tariq Qadan are also on hunger strike to protest prison conditions and administrative detention.
