STOP PRESS: The Sans-Papiers are pressing the Socialists and the Greens (both in the coalition government) to call an urgent interministerial meeting. On hunger strike since 23 May and faced with the government’s refusal to respond, some Sans-Papiers have now sewn their lips. Dozens have been hospitalised. Please act urgently.

Support Undocumented Migrants Sans-Papiers

on hunger strike in Belgium

ACTION ALERT: Write to the Belgian Embassy

About 700 undocumented migrants – Sans-Papiers – have been occupying the ULB and VUB universities, the church of the Béguinage and the ‘See U’ since 30 January 2021.

Since 23 May, hundreds of them have started a hunger strike.

They demand urgent regularisation of the hunger strikers’ immigration status and a law of regularisation with clear and permanent criteria for all Sans-Papiers to be able to get the right to stay.

People without papers have been overexploited by employers and denied their basic rights, resources and services available to others, including healthcare, benefits and housing. They are also facing daily sexist and racist violence.

After months of actions and representations, the Belgian Government has not responded.

Ibtissam, a woman Sans-Papiers interviewed on RTL national TV commented:

It’s up to [the government] to think about us. We have contributed. We have cleaned their houses, we have looked after their children, we have accompanied their mums. We are really doing hard work”.

Most of the hunger strikers are from countries of the South and have been forced to leave their homes to escape violence and poverty. The hunger strikers’ health is deteriorating after 23 days without food. More of them are being hospitalised every day. Please act urgently.
