"I refuse to enlist in the IDF, because the "D" in "IDF" symbolizes death for me. Who has the right to decide for me that I'm not a peace supporter, and has forced me into a corner? I must either lie or pay the price for my principles. In the name of morality, justice and the love of man I will sit in jail."

This is the declaration of Hadas Amit, a 19 year old pacifist refusenik from Rehovot, who has started to serve her fourth term in military jail for refusing to enlist. In a letter that she sent to the military authorities, in which she declared her conscientious objection to military service, Hadas made the following statement:

If I am inducted into the army, this will totally contradict my beliefs and path, in every possible way, since violence, killing, nationalism and destruction are not a part of them. I am not willing to put on the uniform of an organisation which is responsible for killing and destruction, and act in a way that is harmful to its surroundings. Every state, including the State of Israel, must act only in peaceful ways, and even if attacked must not return fire. In every situation, including that of Israel, it isn't right to maintain an army which is trained for war and killing – that way completely contradicts the aspiration for peace and coexistence with our neighbours in the Middle East.

The imprisonment of conscientious objectors such as Hadas Amit constitutes a clear violation of international law and of basic human rights, and is opposed to human morality. In addition, Hadas Amit was imprisoned after she had to undergo the unjust and humiliating procedure of a military board ("conscience committee"), which is hostile to her because of her conscientious objection, and is doubly hostile towards her as a woman. The use of this procedure is of itself a violation of the principles of fairness and justice.
