5000 parents in La Paz demanding immediate discharge from the military for their sons

Bolivia, as you may know, is again in the midst of grassroots insurrection, with road blockades and other actions to press the demands of a broad array of sectors.

But the following article (in spanish) reports on a march by more than 5000 parents in La Paz demanding that the govt immediate discharge their sons from the military (in any case those who have already fulfilled the obligatory length of service), and not put their lives at risk in the road blockades and confrontations! There have been i think 20 or so deaths so far, all but 1 of them - a conscript - caused by the govt/police/military. The article quotes one of the mothers saying "they risk losing their lives and contracting dengue fever... I don't want my son to become a captain or colonel after he's dead, i want him with me as soon as possible...".

Exigen que se licencie a conscriptos La Paz | Anf.- Más de cinco mil padres de conscriptos marcharán hoy desde la ciudad de El Alto hasta el centro de esta capital demandando al Gobierno el inmediato licenciamiento de sus hijos, ante el riesgo de que pierdan la vida en los bloqueos de caminos y enfrentamientos.

Beatriz Bedregal, integrante de la Asociación de Padres de Familia de Conscriptos de La Paz, dijo ayer que su hijo ya cumplió con su servicio obligatorio militar, sin embargo es retenido- como miles de sus camaradas- por los conflictos sociales que existen en el trópico de Cochabamba.

Lamentó que los soldados se encuentren acuartelados desde hace más de dos semanas, y muchos de ellos desplegados en Cochabamba. "Ellos corren el riesgo de perder la vida y de contraer dengue", agregó Bedregal. "No quiero que a mi hijo le vuelvan capitán ni coronel después de muerto, lo quiero conmigo cuanto antes (...) El ya cumplió con la Patria ahora quiere que regrese con su familia", dijo la afligida madre.
